Does the glass get dirty or why would it get unusually dirty?

As with any stove, the glass will get dirty to some degree, however, not excessively so and wood pellet stoves should keep the glass much cleaner than a solid fuel stove typically would. It’s also extremely easy to clean the glass in your wood pellet stove in comparison to solid fuel stoves. This is a result of controlled combustion with the correct air/fuel mix and using fuel with a very low moisture content. It's normal for the viewing glass to form what looks like a light grey haze after a couple of hours burning but it should still be easy to see through.

All our wood pellet stoves are fitted with an air-wash system to help keep the glass clean. The most common reason for glass getting excessively dirty is a reduced air supply which could be caused by:

  • service interval exceeded
  • blocked flue (your stove might be due a service)
  • blocked air intake
  • lack of ventilation
  • poorly fitted or worn door seals
  • ash pan not closed correctly (only affects some models with sealed ashpans)

Other reasons for excessively dirty glass include:

  • poor quality pellets (high moisture content)
  • damp wood pellets
  • very dusty wood pellets
  • incorrect air to fuel ratio, possibly caused by:
    • incorrect settings
    • too much chimney draught
    • too little chimney draught
    • downdraught on your chimney
    • using pellets that are too small or too big
