How often do I need to clean out the stove?

This depends on several factors such as:

  • whether the stove has an automatic cleaning feature
  • how your stove is set up - each stove must be commissioned and adjusted to compensate for the chimney (every chimney is different)
  • the quality of wood pellets being burned
  • how you use your stove, i.e. how many hours you run your stove for per day, what power you run it at, etc.

In general, we recommend that the firepot is clean before every ignition. Some stoves require cleaning on a daily basis but this usually means that they're not set up correctly.

We have several customers who only need to clean their stoves around once per week (without automatic cleaning).

Some of our higher-quality stoves can run up to an incredible 500 hours without cleaning but not many stove can boast this longevity.

So, as you can see, there are many factors which affect how much cleaning is required by the user. Professional maintenance is a strict requirement of all wood pellet stoves and this should be carried out at least once per year or when the stove notifies the user that maintenance is due. This maintenance requirement is greatly affected by the quality of wood pellets being used. See your stove's user manual for further information and any specific requirements for your stove model.

The main aspect of regular user maintenance is to ensure that all airways are clean and this mainly requires cleaning of the firepot.

The main benefits of keeping your stove well maintained are:

  • burns more efficiently – better for the environment and cheaper to run
  • keeps the viewing glass cleaner
  • offers more reliable and consistent start-ups
  • safer - reduced risk of carbon monoxide, explosive ignitions, etc.
