Is there much work to upgrading a solid fuel boiler stove to a wood pellet boiler stove?

No, it should only be a matter of swapping out the stove itself. However, we always recommend that every stove is installed correctly and according to Building Regulations so it’s a good time to upgrade flues or hearths, should the existing ones not be to the correct standard.

Every biomass appliance should have a means of keeping its return water temperature hot (to avoid thermal shock and premature corrosion) so a thermal mixing valve may need to be fitted near the stove.

Any flues, hearths, etc. that were installed for a solid fuel stove and in accordance with the correct standards will comply with your new wood pellet stove installation. Most wood pellet stoves incorporate a small expansion vessel, energy-efficient circulation pump, safety valve, automatic air vent and other components, making installation very simple for the plumber/installer.

All heating systems should be sealed where possible, however, most pellet stoves can also run on open systems where required.
