Can I use a balanced flue with my pellet stove?

Some wood pellet stoves can be run on a balanced flue, however it is generally much better to have a separate air supply. This is based on science.

Because wood pellet appliances must be flued vertically to comply with manufacturer’s instructions and Building Regulations, the air intake from a balanced flue would generally be from a significant height. This would be likely to cause issues with draught pressure and is the main reason that we don't recommend it.

Some balanced flues can allow intake air to enter at a low level, whilst flue gases escape vertically as normal. This would be a different type of balanced flue but isn't generally available in Ireland.

In almost all cases, you can bring intake air directly into the back of your stove or boiler from outside, through a designated air supply duct. It is important to note however, that this does NOT mean the stove is certified "airtight" or "room-sealed" although some suppliers would have you believe it does. It is very important to verify that your stove or boiler is in fact "airtight" if you are hoping to install it without a separate room vent.

We strongly recommend the installation of airtight stoves and boilers because:

  •  they are much safer - almost zero risk of CO poisoning.
  • they don't take air from the room.
  • there are no draughts because a separate room vent is not required.
