How would I know if the ignition element is faulty?

If your ignition element is working correctly, it should be very hot and glowing orange during the ignition cycle. It can however, be difficult to see this without removing the burnpot. In order to check, you can do the following very carefully:

  • Start your stove and leave it to heat up for a few minutes.
  • Check to see if you can see a glow behind or beside the burnpot (sometimes, this will be visible through the glass).
  • If it's not visible, you can open the door, carefully remove the burnpot (beware, it could be hot) and look to see if you can see a glow.
  • Check the burnpot to see if it’s beginning to heat up.
  • Check if any of the pellets, near the hole for the ignition element, are beginning to blacken.

WARNING: Please take care not to touch the ignition element or the holding tube as it could lead to a severe burn.

If there’s no glow or if everything seems very cold, then it’s likely that your ignition element has failed and you need to contact a technician to replace it for you. Ignition elements aren’t usually covered under appliance warranties but they’re generally not expensive and are easy to replace.

Note: the above checks will probably result in disturbance of the pellets in the burnpot and perhaps some wood pellets falling into the wrong places as it attempts to light. Therefore, a failed ignition is more likely and you may need to vacuum up any pellets before continuing to use your stove.
