How would I know if the ignition element is faulty?

If your ignition element is working correctly, it should be very hot and glowing orange during the ignition cycle. It can however, be difficult to see this without removing the burnpot. In order to check, you can do the following very carefully:

  • Start your stove and leave it to heat up for maybe 3 minutes or so (this will depend on the type of ignition element in your stove and some will heat up much quicker than this).
  • Then, open the door, remove the burnpot and look to see if you can see a glow.
  • Check the burnpot to see if it’s beginning to heat up.
  • Check if any of the pellets, near the hole for the ignition element, are beginning to blacken.

WARNING: Please take care not to touch the ignition element or the holding tube as it could lead to a severe burn.

If there’s no glow or if everything feels very cold, then it’s likely that your ignition element has failed and you need to contact a technician to replace it for you. Ignition elements aren’t always covered under warranty but they’re generally not expensive and are easy to replace.

Note: the above checks will probably result in some wood pellets falling into the wrong places as it attempts to light. You may need to vacuum these up before continuing with using your stove or at least at the next ash removal interval.
